White City was a band originally formed in 1998 by musicians
Daniel Lloyd, Ben Lloyd, Jared Russell, and Tige Campbell. Through-out the
4 or 5 years of their first incarnation, White City worked many other core
musicians such as Cache Tolman, Josh Dickson, Ryan Mills, Raga P, and Sam
Compton.
They used to also change their name at will and specific to records and
shows. Some memorable names include:
White City Institute of Ganja Logic
White City Rockers
White City Brain Cloud
White City Sacred Beat Geometry
In the early days White City sounded like a unique jazz/funk fusion with
many changes and the occasional odd timed rhythm. The first record was called
the White City Groove Police and was released on cassette tape in 1999 by
what was to become the Issue Records. The name Issue records
was a spin off of a local art and music zine put together by Daniel and
Chris Wright years earlier.
The second White city Record was entitled the White City Ganja Coalition.
With this record you started to hear the influence of reggae music integrated
into the track list. This record featured some bootlegged audio from a Terence
Mckenna lecture, samples from Evildead 2, and even a punk rock anthem called
insubordination. The Ganja Coalition record plays seamlessly and used samples
to bridge songs.
The next record, White Citys Tropical Brain Forest signified the outfits
new found effort to realize a more focused reggae sound. This was largely
assisted by the line up now including members of Salt Lake dub Trio Lion
Dub Station (Cache, Jared, Josh). This record also featured Ragga P on two
tracks Real it is for Real and Full ah Lyrics. Sam Compton also played on
this record and introduced a Dick Dale style surf guitar that complimented
Tiges rhythm guitar tracks.
The last White City album White City Science Fiction Reggae Live was never
formally released to the public. It featured Sam Compton now on bass and
is definitely the dubbiest and most straight reggae record of the collection.
Keep your eyes peeled in the near future for the proper release of this
record as well as maybe a best of or White city Box set.
